The origins of "Eve" are as compelling as the sculpture itself. Rodin’s first model for the piece was Adele Abruzzezzi, a young peasant woman from the mountains of central Italy. Her departure from his studio—prompted by her unexpected pregnancy—resulted in the unfinished quality noticeable in both the face and body of the original figure, imbuing the work with a raw, authentic emotional depth. This unrefined state lends "Eve" a sense of immediacy and poignant human vulnerability.

In a subsequent, smaller version, Rodin chose a thinner English model, refining the form to create a more sensuous and graceful representation.
