"Descending Night" and its counterpart, "Rising Day," were originally designed as fountain figures for the 1915 Panama-Pacific International Exposition in San Francisco. After the exhibition, Weinman replicated both sculptures in two sizes: approximately 24 inches tall and approximately 57 inches tall.
This particular sculpture is signed by A. A. Weinman, the talented artist behind its creation. Born in Germany, Weinman immigrated to the United States at a young age. He honed his craft as an apprentice to carver Frederick Kaldenberg, while also studying drawing and modeling at Cooper Union in the evenings. Later, he furthered his artistic education at the Art Students League under the guidance of the esteemed American sculptor Augustus Saint-Gaudens.
Weinman's repertoire includes a wide range of sculptures, from portrait statues to captivating and dramatic pieces. Notable among his works are the Fountain of the Water Centaurs at the Missouri State Capitol, Riders of the Dawn at Brookgreen Gardens in South Carolina, and renowned pieces like "Rising Sun," "Duet," "Narcissus," and "Aphrodite."
