These lovers, who found inspiration in the tale of Lancelot and Guinevere, met their demise at the hands of Francesca's husband, Giovanni Malatesta. They were condemned to the second circle of hell for their passionate love, forever separated in the afterlife. In this sculpture, their lips don't quite touch, suggesting an interrupted moment that sealed their fate.
