Originally destined for St. Peter's Basilica, both the sculpture and the tomb found their home in the minor church of San Pietro in Vincoli on the Esquiline Hill in Rome following the pope's passing. This church held significance for the Della Rovere family, from which Julius hailed, and where he had served as a cardinal.
The sculpture of Moses is an iconic representation, notable for its distinctive depiction of Moses with horns adorning his head. This curious detail arose from a mistranslation of Exodus 34:29-35 by St. Jerome. In the original text, Moses is described as having "rays of the skin of his face," which Jerome, in the Vulgate translation, interpreted as "horns" (related to the Latin word for "radiance"). This translation error became embedded in artistic representations over time.
Michelangelo regarded his creation of Moses as one of his most lifelike and remarkable achievements. Legend holds that upon completing the sculpture, he struck its right knee, commanding, "Now speak!" as if he believed that the sculpture contained a spark of life. A scar visible on the knee is said to bear the mark of Michelangelo's hammer, adding to the mystique of this masterpiece.
Our meticulously crafted bronze replica of Michelangelo's Moses is a testament to the artistry of the original. Handmade using the traditional "Lost Wax Method," the sculpture captures the essence and fine details of the marble original. With its dark brown patina, it exudes a timeless elegance and rests gracefully atop a black marble base.
Owning this bronze replica allows you to bring home a piece of art history and marvel at the genius of Michelangelo. Display it proudly as a symbol of beauty, craftsmanship, and the enduring legacy of one of the world's greatest sculptors.
